Hybrid cars are fuel-efficient and eco-friendly, but some of the repairs can be quite costly. That’s why it’s a good idea to know what some of the more common hybrid repair issues are so you can take the necessary maintenance measures to avoid or at least minimize the costs associated with them.
- Batteries – On many hybrid vehicles, the batteries are designed to last up to 10 years before having to be replaced. When it comes to hybrid vehicles, like a Prius, the batteries should be at the top of your maintenance checklist. Keep it charged and make sure you let the batteries warm up before you go out on a cold day. You can also bring your vehicle to Country Road Automotive. We have technicians who are specially-trained to deal with hybrid battery maintenance. We will make sure all the wires are in good condition and that there is no corrosion on the batteries.
- Oxygen Sensors – Similar to vehicles with combustion engines, the oxygen sensors can go bad and will end up costing you in fuel efficiency and engine operation. The performance of an O2 sensor will diminish with age. When having a tune-up done, ask to have the performance of the oxygen sensors checked. It’s also prudent to deal with emissions issues (they will trigger the Check Engine Light) before they become major problems.
- Catalytic Converter – It’s a small part that packs a big punch when it comes to replacement. Have the engine tuned up regularly. Old spark plugs and wires, a bad oxygen sensor, faulty fuel sensors or filters will lead to engine performance issues that can cause problems with the catalytic converter.
- Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) System – Leaks in the evaporative emissions system are one of the more frequent hybrid repair issues. The Check Engine Light will come on and you may notice the smell of gasoline. EVAP leaks can be somewhat challenging to troubleshoot and fix. If your hybrid’s Check Engine Light comes on, schedule an appointment to have us check it out.
