Any time you see a “red” warning light on your dashboard, it is cause for immediate action. If the engine oil light warning light is lit on your dashboard, it’s because the pressure of the engine oil has dropped too low. If you continue to drive with this light on, your car’s engine will be damaged and any repairs will be extremely costly. If the engine seizes, you are most likely looking at having to buy a new engine or a new car. Read on to find out why the engine oil light came on and what you should do about it.
Q. What could cause an engine oil light to come on?
A. As mentioned above, the engine oil light will come on when the oil pressure drops too low. An engine requires a certain oil pressure to properly lubricate all the engine parts. Most commonly, the light comes on because there’s not enough oil in the engine. It could also happen if the oil pressure sending unit is faulty or leaking.
Q. What can I do to protect my car’s engine and prevent the light from coming on?
A. The best way to protect your car’s engine is to commit to regular oil and filter changes (click to read why you shouldn’t skip your next oil change). Between oil changes it’s also advisable to check the oil level once a month. If you have to add oil, make sure you use the same oil type, weight and viscosity that’s already in your engine. If you notice a quick drop in the level, there’s a leak somewhere that should be addressed right away. The auto technicians at Country Road Automotive have the training and equipment to quickly find and repair any problems you may be having with oil leaks.
Q. What should I do if the engine oil light comes on while I’m driving?
A. If the engine oil light comes on and stays on when you start your car, don’t drive it. Check the oil level. If it’s low, add oil and then schedule an appointment to have your vehicle checked for oil leaks and/or a problem with the oil pressure sending unit. If the light comes on while you are driving, safely pull over to the side of the road, turn off your vehicle, and call for a tow.
